We have released the Graphing control, our richest CUI sample control to date. It enables developers to display clinical data series in a clear, consistent graphical medium in their applications.

The control is available in Microsoft Silverlight and Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF).

The Graphing control presents a set of features to promote quick understanding and detailed interrogation of data, such as:

...and the ability to show or hide data values, graph lines and grid lines:

 

Smooth scrolling and scale-to-fit features complete this functionally rich environment.

The Graphing Control can also be seen during design time using Microsoft Expression Blend where the appearance can be customized by providing a new control template.

Although our downloadable Graphing control has been designed to allow the binding of any data source, we’ve configured the example on this Website to show how it can provide developers with a straightforward way to conform to the graphing elements of the Design Guidance for Displaying Graphs and Tables for patient vital signs temperature, pulse rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation) data.

We would like to tell you about the additions and enhancements we’ve made to Microsoft Health CUI in the February 2009 release. 

New Design Guidance and Toolkit Controls

We’ve released the following new features:

• Graphing Control: The graphing control is the most functionally rich of the CUI controls released to date. This sample application presents a set of features to promote quick understanding and detailed interrogation of data. These features include a focus line to reveal values across all graphed data, an option to display and hide data labels and the ability to remove, replace and reorder the stacked graphs.

• Design Guidance – Displaying Adverse Drug Reaction Risks: This new guidance (referencing a study which found that an estimated 6.5% of hospital admissions are due to an adverse drug reaction) provides recommendations for indicating which drugs present a risk to a patient, based upon adverse drug reactions the patient has had in the past. It addresses how to display a summary of these drugs and the nature of the reactions the patient has suffered, to support clinician decision making.

 We’ve also made the following updates to existing items:

• MedicationsListView control: In addition to bug fixes in the initial CTP version of the control, we’ve added support for larger datasets and improved keyboard accessibility.
• Design Guidance – Medications Line: Significant extension of the scope and detail of the guidance, including how to display medication dose and strength.
• Design Guidance – Displaying Graphs and Tables: Minor update relating to displaying the most recent values in tables.

Showcase Updates

In December, we released a new version of our Patient Journey Demonstrator that includes applications of our latest design guidance, the incorporation of SNOMED CLINICAL TERMS^® (provided by Health Language Inc.), and other innovative features.

At the end of 2008, we had the pleasure of meeting with four Independent Software Vendors – Bluewire Technologies, In4tek (now known as Civica), Map of Medicine and The Learning Clinic – who talked about the challenges that they face with technology within the medical arena, and how the Microsoft Health CUI is helping them to overcome these.
